Monday, March 01, 2004Possibly worse than sick kids: well kids when you're sick yourself. Where do they get all this energy?
Software
- SQLIO Disk Subsystem Benchmark Tool - New tool from Microsoft to help properly size servers.
- Smart Client Offline Application Block - The latest from the Patterns & Practices Group.
- Vault 2.0.1 - Minor fixes from SourceGear.
- PocketThinker - Store little outlines inside of Outlook, like notes. 30-day trial, $19.75 to register. (via Slipstick)
- Groove 3.0 Beta - Not available yet, but you can sign up. Looks like they might finally move to a Windows-standard UI. (Just in time for Longhorn to ruin everything on the UI front). (via S.B. Chatterjee)
Community
Syntax, Semantics, Micronesian cults and Novice Programmers - In which Eric Lippert urges novice developers to cultivate understanding. (One wonders if he's ever read Steve McConnell's Cargo Cult Software Engineering essay.)
- DevDays Re-Cap - Tim Marman went to the New York City version. He wasn't very impressed.
Rants
- Yukon beta-tester says slower is better - Hideously irresponsible reporting from SearchDatabase.com. It's not even a beta yet, people; it's an alpha. Microsoft has made it abundantly clear that this isn't ready for performance testing yet. (And even if it were, you wouldn't be able to publish the results thanks to the license agreements prevalent in the database industry, but that's another rant). Plus I had to read the Q&A with the beta tester twice to find the one sentence where he mentions performance; the headline writer presumably chose that rather than the VLDB support or CLR integration in the hopes of driving traffic. Hmph. Maybe I shouldn't even link to this junk.
